Dr. Michael Borger completed his cardiac surgery training and a PhD in Clinical Cardiovascular Sciences at the University of Toronto, Canada in 2001. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Borger did a one-year fellowship with Professor Friedrich Mohr in minimal invasive valve surgery at the Leipzig Heart Center in 2001.
Dr. Borger worked as a Staff Cardiac Surgeon at Toronto General Hospital and as Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Toronto from 2002 to 2006, under the mentorship of Dr. Tirone David. In 2006, Dr. Borger returned to Leipzig, Germany where he currently works as a staff surgeon at the Leipzig Heart Center and is Professor of Surgery at the University of Leipzig. He was appointed as Assistant Director of the Leipzig Heart Center in 2009.
His clinical and research interests include minimal invasive and percutaneous valve procedures, aortic surgery, valve repair surgery, and ischemic mitral regurgitation. He is an author on over 150 peer-reviewed publications and sits on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and the Canadian Journal of Cardiology.
